Director of People + Culture

Reporting to the Co-CEOs, the Director of People + Culture (DOPC) will create an inspiring experience for our staff. The DOPC is responsible for planning, directing and executing all human resources (HR) and culture-building initiatives to achieve the organizations, Vision. They will manage compliance requirements of all HR functions and provides comprehensive HR services to all employees within the organization. This position works closely with the co-CEOs and Executive Team to execute a transformational employment journey for our staff in recruiting, onboarding and orientation, payroll, learning + professional development, staff support, safety, performance management, talent development, compensation and benefits in line with the businesses Mission, Vision, and Community Values. This position leads and coaches a team of four full time HR professionals and provides oversight for the organizations third-party payroll and benefits administrator, the Mesa Network.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Staff Experience: Develops and executes on the overall strategy for People + Culture processes and systems for the business. Creates an environment and experience that make staff feel that this organization is the BEST PLACE TO WORK. Staff are diverse, well-compensated, learning + growing, thriving and deeply connected to each other and the organizations Vision, Mission and Values. Models exceptional internal hospitality.   • Culture: Strengthens the organizations culture by ensuring all staff feel welcome, safe, appreciated, respected, engaged and empowered. Makes intentional efforts to ensure transparency, fairness and equity in all operations and that there is ongoing feedback and communication across all levels of the organization. Ensures diverse staff from marginalized groups have equal access to opportunities and feel like they belong at the company. Measures staff satisfaction via surveys regularly and takes appropriate action to respond and address feedback. Ensures that the HR function within the organization never forgets the “human” and no matter how long they stay and no matter how they depart they are treated with dignity and respect.
  • Talent Management + Development: Drives initiatives with leadership and management to recruit, train, evaluate, recognize, develop and inspire high performing teams. Partners with leadership to identify high potential staff for leadership roles. Develops and directs accountability and progressive discipline practices for staff performance in alignment with our values. Partners with operators to anticipate and plan for organizational changes to ensure appropriate staffing. Oversees recruitment and learning and development for all positions to provide management with qualified candidates who strive for greatness. Aims to hire from within the diverse communities we operate in whenever possible.
  • Organization Development + Change Management: Provides input and guidance on organizational changes to meet evolving business needs and the potential impact on staff. Collaborates across the organization on how to develop and implement successful and compassionate change management initiatives and strategies. Ensures staff feel engaged and included in company decisions.
  • Compensation + Benefits: Directs the annual compensation review process. Responsible for ensuring organizations pay and benefits are in alignment with our Compensation Guidelines -- externally competitive, internally equitable and financially sustainable for the business. Partners with external partners to develop a benefit strategy and negotiates beneficial terms and costs for the organization. Holds external partners accountable for delivering on services and contracts.
  • Payroll + HRIS Management: Responsible for managing the organizations third-party payroll administrator, Mesa Network, and HRIS technology, Paycom. Ensures payroll is accurate, on-time and compliant. Holds Paycom accountable for services and functionality. Regularly seeks ways to improve and enhance the system and that all users are well-trained. Responsible for the overall architecture of the Paycom system for maximum benefit to the business and its staff. Holds Paycom accountable for delivering on services and contracts.
  • Employee Relations: Ensures all staff reports are timely followed up on and resolved with proper documentation and accountability. Actively mentors and trains management to effectively onboard, train and provide feedback to staff to prevent incidents. Provides training to managers to ensure they can effectively investigate and resolve matters. Develops and delivers tools and trainings related to effective communication, feedback, conflict resolution and relationship building to reduce incidents.
  • Occupational Safety: Serves as driving force for creating a culture of occupational safety at the business in conjunction with our Safety Lead. Provides oversight, guidance and strategy related to occupational safety with the goal to reduce incidents and injuries below industry average. Ensures all staff understand how to work safely and immediately address hazards. Actively manages the organizations relationship with its insurer and third-party broker. Aims to reduce overall costs through efforts.
  • Leaves + Accommodations: Directs leave, accommodations and related policies and practices to support staff. Ensures businesses can effectively support staff on leave or with accommodations while also addressing business needs.
  • HR Policy, Compliance + Reporting: Develops and maintains all employment policies and guidelines and informs staff of their rights and responsibilities. Responsible for the organizations Staff Guide and supporting resources. Ensures business practices, policies, payroll and benefits are compliant. Ensures all requisite government reports are filed timely. Stays abreast of legal and compliance changes and updates materials, trainings and practices timely.
  • Risk Management: Responsible for evaluating, reducing and managing risk for the organization as it relates to labor and employment practices. Partners with external counsel and insurers to evaluate situations and apply appropriate action.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 10 years of progressive HR experience, preferably in food, retail, hospitality or similar.

  • Genuinely finds interest in learning about and sharing Good Food.
  • Broad and thorough knowledge of local, state, and federal employment laws and worker’s compensation procedures.
  • Experience successfully resolving employee relations matters. Effective conflict resolution skills with a focus on preserving and strengthening relationships.
  • Experience designing and implementing new HR programs and initiatives in a bilingual organization.
  • Change management expertise and experience with internal communications.
  • Organized, meticulous, and thorough; Able to work independently and prioritize competing projects and needs in a highly dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated project management, documentation and process building skills; Strong presentation and meeting facilitation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to connect, support, and empathize with a diversity of people and perspectives.
  • Extraordinary learning agility, ability to bring prior expertise and adapt appropriately to our unique and dynamic culture.
  • Ability to research, evaluate and analyze complex information and situations; Strong, creative decision-making skills with a bias for action.

  • Our Executive Team is comprised of strategic operators – we think and execute on big picture strategy to move the company forward, but we aren’t afraid to roll up our sleeves and jump in, when needed.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook. Demonstrated interest and ability to learn, evaluate and implement new technologies.
  • Experience with Human Resource Information Systems (e.g. Paycom), Applicant Tracking Systems (e.g. Paycor), Learning Management Systems, Project Management software (e.g. Monday.com) preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish strongly preferred.
  • College or master’s degree in related field preferred.
  • SHRM or similar HR certification preferred.
  • Ability to regularly travel to all business locations in the Bay Area.

 

COMPENSATION

The starting base salary for this role is $150,000, depending on experience.
